“We’re under huge pressure and we have to give it everything to make the fans and the whole Moroccan family proud. We’re a very united people and it’s a pleasure and a responsibility to represent them.”

Those were the words young Morocco star Mohamed Hamony speaking ahead of his nation’s clash against IR Iran in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023™ on Tuesday in Surabaya.

The forward, who plays in France for Le Havre, turned 17 in August. Some of his Morocco team-mates are still 16 years old, but despite being adolescents they all feel the weight of playing for their country.

It is no surprise. In recent times the Atlas Lions have achieved great success in international tournaments at all levels, not least the heroic campaign at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ that amazed and thrilled fans all over the planet.

“What they did set a new standard for us! We want to go further and make history and make the Moroccan people even prouder,” said Hamony.

Expectations are high and the football that Hamony and his team-mates have shown in the tournament has further fuelled their passionate supporters’ hopes of a rosy future. This is true both in the short term, in the knockout phase of this World Cup, and looking further ahead with a new crop of talented players being primed to feed the senior team.

“When we got here, we had one goal in mind: to finish top of the group. We did it thanks to our hard work,” Hamony told FIFA.

In Group A, based in Surabaya, Morocco began by beating Panama 2-0 and ended the dreams of host nation Indonesia with a 3-1 victory in the last round of matches. In between, the Africans were defeated 2-0 by Ecuador.

Hamony scored his team’s first goal at the tournament against Los Canaleros, but his importance to the team goes far beyond his goals. Most of Morocco’s attacking play tends to pass through him, especially when he works his way up the left wing, making life difficult for the opposition full-back with his combination of talent, speed and audacity.

“I want to score more goals and play better every game, God willing. My aim is simple. Like most of the players I want to be the MVP at the tournament, but that takes a lot of hard work.”

Comparing different teams may be a thankless task, especially when putting this U-17 side up against the team that made history in Qatar by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final. Nevertheless, there are noticeable similarities, at least from the tactical point of view.

For a squad of teenagers, coach Said Chiba has instilled an admirable discipline with and without the ball. His charges keep it tight defensively, closing off passing lanes in a 4-5-1 system, but do not drop too deep. When they recover the ball, the formation transforms into a 4-2-3-1, with Hamony and Ayman Ennair providing the width on the flanks.

“We have the same determination to win, without doubt, and the same approach and mindset,” added Hamony. “Our biggest asset is something very simple but which is difficult to achieve, which is our organisation. We always play the same way, which leads to the best results.”

Ils ont eu un 3eme match facile ou ils ont gagné 5-0, et ils sont très physique donc je pense qu’à ce niveau la ils seront aussi prêt que nous. Va falloir être très efficace sur le peu d’occasions qu’on risque d’avoir.

Parce que c pas des 17 ans that's why , it's is obvious guys ! La formation mexicaine est infiniment supérieure à celle de tout pays africain  alors la3ssak le Mali pays en guerre sans infrastructures, j'ai vécu au Mexique, chaque club a des centres de formation sophistiqués comme aux USA, n'importe quel club U17 Mexicain tape n'importe quel club Africain (hors Wydad) à condition qie lea jeunes aient le même âge

L’équateur est vice champion de se confédération. C’est tout sauf des peintres. 

Tu oublies de dire que le 3-1 c’était durant les prolongations.
